The Administration's Ocean and Coastal Fact Sheets
The Bush Administrations environmental philosophy is built upon results, sound science and quality data, technology and policy innovations, local collaboration for local solutions, and Americas ethic of personal stewardship and responsibility. This underlying philosophy is evident in the Administrations innovative management and scientific research of our Nations oceans and coasts. For example, the 2002 Farm Bill, which President Bush signed into law, provides $40 billion over the next ten years to farmers and ranchers who implement land conservation practices, especially in areas that are critical to reducing runoff of sediments and nutrients which ultimately impact our Nations aquatic and marine environments. The Bush Administration is also leading an effort to fill environmental data gaps by bringing the international community together to create an integrated and comprehensive global earth observing (GEO) system, of which an Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) is one component. A comprehensive environmental data system will assist the global community in making more accurate environmental decisions which can have substantial economic and social impacts. These are only two examples of the actions the Bush Administration is taking to protect our oceans and coasts.
